I have found the Song of Ice and Fire series absolutely addictive and I am in awe of Martin's ability to create and sustain such a complex world. It's no secret I like fantasy books, and I have (dare I say) enjoyed this more than The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I like the strong female characters trying to make their way in a medieval world, not kindly disposed to women and girls. I like the little bit of magic that is woven in to the stories. I love the maps but am frustrated that not all lands are mapped (I have read somewhere this is intentional). I have considered trying to map it out myself, but am worried my sisters will tease me for being too much of a nerd- though watch this space (to put in context, I have a degree in geography so the interest is also professional). We have also enjoyed the television series of the first book, A Game of Thrones. The next season is out in April and we are looking forward to that.
A1 has been reading books from the Our Australian Girl series. Her book loving Auntie- Sister 2- has been buying them for her as they have been released.
A1 absolutely loved the Little House on the Prairie series when she read it a few years ago, and these books are great because they feature girls as the main characters in an Australian historical context. A1 is reading the Letty books right now.
And I am so excited with the reading A2 and I are doing together at the moment. A2 is at the stage where she is beginning to read- and its the old faithful Meg and Mog that was A1's first book she read herself that A2 is reading. A2 is starting to use visual clues in pictures to help her with words, but also memorising text in books we read quite a bit.
I will really enjoy this year of reading with A2, recalling the hell that is kindergarten readers. Check out Bron's to see what others are reading this month.

Dear little A2, Meg and Mog was my favourite book as a small child. I borrowed it from Woden Library so many times that the librarian asked my mum to buy me a copy! Enjoy your 'reading'. :-)
ReplyDeleteps. Jo... I'm going to look out for the Song of Ice & Fire series now. Thanks.
